In the past I have worked with a wide range of clients and have produced everything from YouTube scripts and website content to policy papers and academic books.

All my work meets the highest academic standards, but the findings that I present can be tailored to suit any audience. I am a registered sole trader and primarily work as an independent research consultant.

History

I am a capable and driven historical researcher with an exemplary academic record. I have conducted archival research in four countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, the USA, and the UK) and interviewed numerous influential figures, including the late Lord Ashdown (regarding his tenure as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina) and a range of diplomats, military personnel, and representatives from international organisations.

Furthermore, my portfolio of publications proves my ability to produce work of the highest quality while meeting editorial deadlines.

I am open to discussing potential projects – including academic collaborations, investigations for organisations, or simply research for a private individual – that touch on any of my areas of expertise.

Having studied war and its impact on human societies for over a decade (including living and travelling in many post-conflict environments), I am committed to the cause of peace. As a historian, I have brought new light on aspects of the 1992 – 1995 War in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a research consultant, I have utilised my knowledge and skills to assess a wide range of other conflicts: In Peace and Conflict Since 1991, for example, I analysed almost fifty wars.

Furthermore, I am developing a growing body of knowledge and expertise regarding international intervention in conflicts, with a particular focus on peacekeeping missions, peace support operations, and post-conflict international statebuilding initiatives.

As a result, I am well-placed to offer anything from literature reviews and personal briefings to policy papers, academic articles, and books on the subject.

Conflict Analysis and Peacebuilding

Defence, Security, and the Military

Most of my research to date has focused on the construction and development of armed forces. Indeed, the puzzle of how to build a cohesive and effective fighting force out of groups of people who may not be inclined to serve alongside each other has underpinned my work for over five years. 

My forthcoming book, Building the Military in a Multinational State, explores how a total of six armies were built in Bosnia and Herzegovina over a just a few decades. My military history background, coupled with the work I have done on more contemporary security challenges, puts me in an excellent position to conduct research in this field.

In this capacity I can offer a range of services, including literature reviews and personal briefings; policy papers; as well as academic articles and books. I would like to highlight, however, that my assessments mostly focus on themes more centred on organisation, structure, composition, and civil-military relations rather than operational capability – I do not have a military background or any training.

I would be particularly interested in projects concerning:

  • Peacekeeping – especially those that aim to explore the use of peacekeepers from countries undergoing a post-conflict transition in other conflict-affected areas.
  • Multiethnic/national armed forces – with a focus on the armies of countries recovering from intrastate conflict.

     

I have a few years of experience teaching at every undergraduate level in the School of History at the University of East Anglia. My work as an Associate Tutor there ranged from leading groups of first-year undergraduates through introductory survey modules to providing 3-hour long sessions (often based on my own research) to specialist third-year students.

In addition, I have delivered guest lectures to military/professional audiences such as the Royal Danish Defence College and the International Peace and Security Institute’s Symposium on Post-Conflict Transitions.
